I have just finished watching a video where a creativity expert named Sir Ken Robinson discusses creativity in the classroom. Sir Ken Robinson informs the audience that teachers are teaching the students so they are prepared for the future. Also, he goes into great detail that our current school system relies very heavily on teaching certain subjects that they deem important in order for students to find a job after school. In basic terms, the arts are on the bottom of the totem pole in the educational system. Teachers are now setting students up for the current job market for today's standards, instead of letting the students find a creativie outlet. Students are more and more worried in our society today about being wrong, rather than about their creativity skills because the educational system is squashing the way the students think.
I agree a hundred percent with Sir Ken Robinson about the use of creativity in the classroom. One of the reasons I agree with Sir Ken Robinson is due to the fact that he talks about how school systems view the arts as the bottom of the spectrum. In my opinion, this is very accurate because sometimes schools need to cut their budget and tend to cut the budget for related arts classes. Also, I agree that we need to get students ready for their generation which I feel that creativity in the classroom will go along way in order to help teachers prepare their students. Another reason I agree with Sir Ken Robinson is because of my own personal experiences in the educational system. I remember when I was in elementary school, and I would run home so my parents and I could view my report card comments. The teacher would talk about how creative I was and I remember applying more effort into the classes. Unfortunately while growing up in the school system, I suffered as many other students do. I was told to not worry about creative skills and only focus on certain subjects. I lost that will to enjoy the subjects that I was learning, and because there was only one right way I also grew to be scared of being wrong. I think students should never lose the fear to be wrong because we are all humans and we can grow from our mistakes or errors. I think Sir Ken Robinson was spot on when he informed the audience that teachers should give students more creative opportunities. I will try to implement as many creative projects or ideas into my future classroom.
